Community Learning Center (HOST)

The Seattle Parks and Recreation Community Learning Center (CLC) at Washington Middle School aims to bridge the gap between communities and schools, by creating programs that are culturally relevant and reflective of the community we serve.

The WMS CLC offers the following seasonal programs:

  • Huskies Out of School Time (HOST): Fall-Winter and Spring
  • Parks Academy of Learning Summer Program (PALS)

The Parks Academy of Learning Summer (PALS) Enrichment Program will run Monday–Friday, June 29–July 24, from 9:15 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. Transportation will be coordinated with the Seattle Schools Transportation office for drop off and pick up locations.

The Parks Academy of Learning morning will consist of enrichment in ELA and Math. The afternoon enrichment is coordinated with local community-based organizations, community stakeholders, and small business owners.
Scholars are required to attend academic engagement in the morning if they wish to participate in scheduled field trips every Friday. 6th grade students will be required to attend morning and after school enrichment. This is to help ease the anxiety of transitioning from the elementary school grade level and meet the new challenge of their middle school journey. 7th and 8th grade students are not required to attend afternoon enrichment but highly encouraged to stay and participate.

Contact the CLC Coordinator, Robert Chandler at rachandler@seattleschools.org or 206-849-9203 with any questions. See you this summer!

The CLC’s guiding values are to:

  • Create opportunities for youth to develop positive relationships with peers and adults
  • Strengthen the connection youth feel to their school and community
  • Assist youth in building new competencies and skills
