RET Planning Meeting, 2 October 2018, WMS Library

Present:  Cheyenne, LaKesha and Elaine met to follow-up on meeting with Emily.

We propose that RET be responsible for WMS staff PD on:
    • Nov. 7 (afternoon) with Leadership student presentation
    • Dec. 12 (afternoon)
    • and 2 or 3 of the following afternoons: Jan. 9, Feb. 13, March 13, May 8, or June 12.

RET Meetings on Thursdays [NOTE from Elaine: Perhaps we should have our initial evening meeting on a Monday in keeping with last year’s schedule and at that first meeting ask those attending whether or not Thursdays would work. What do you think?]:

RET membership: We discussed an application process and decided it would it be a barrier to involvement and would violate the spirit of inclusion RET seeks to foster. Would there be inequity in application process? We think that as long as we give people an idea of the amount and type of work needed from members, that should suffice. There could also be two different levels of RET involvement: full members plan PD and other activities, partial members engage in readings and conversations to develop shared understanding of the issues.

PTSA – RET would like to partner, but we’d need to know how PTSA might want to involve us. What might collaboration look like? We considered a common reading, film viewing for community conversations. One suggestion was Sharon Morgan & Tom DeWolf’s, Gather at the Table: The Healing Journal of a Daughter of Slavery and a Son of the Slave Trade. LaKesha knows the authors. There is a companion film, Trace of the Trade. http://gatheratthetable.net/library/tool_kit.pdf . Elaine found an article mentioned by Emily from The Atlantic (https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2018/06/the-birth-of-a-new-american-aristocracy/559130/).
