    Good evening, Washington Families,

Last week was a full week of events, including a well attended Science Showcase on Thursday night. I wanted to extend a huge congratulations and thank you to our science teachers, who did an amazing job of coordinating the event this year, which was one of the better attended science nights in the last few years.

New Counselor, Courtney Hamilton: We want to welcome interim counselor, Courtney Hamilton, who will serve as counselor for 7th grade students for the remainder of the year. Mr. Matsumoto will serve our 6th and 8th grade students for the remainder of the year. Ms. Hamilton can be reached at cshamilton@seattleschools.org.

Spirit Week: We have rescheduled the winter Spirit Week that was interrupted by snow days for April 1-April 5th. A flyer was sent home with students today announcing the dress days. They are also posted on the website. Students are encouraged to dress up and show their spirit while still dressing in line with our school dress code policy.

BLT Budget Proposal Approved by WMS SEA Staff: WMS SEA staff voted on the BLT 2019-2020 Budget Proposal and approved it by a more than two-thirds vote. The approved budget will be posted online tomorrow.

Bathroom Changes: A letter was sent home and posted to the website about the reopening of the girls, multi-stall restroom near the counseling office and cafeteria and the relocation of the gender neutral bathroom to the single stall restroom in the counseling office. Both of these bathrooms, as well as the boys bathroom near 105 will be available during lunches for student use. The change was announced to students last week. We will also be exploring options for adding a second gender neutral bathroom on the first floor based on feedback from students.

Orchestra Teacher: Our orchestra teacher, Ms. Greenbaum, has been selected as the 2019-2020 Orchestra Director for Lincoln high school. While we are excited for Ms. Greenbaum and her new and exciting full-time opportunity at Lincoln, we will miss her leadership at WMS. Ms. Greenbaum will continue serving our orchestra students for the remainder of the year.

AAMA Conference: Over the last half of the week a group of 9 WMS leaders, staff, students, and a parent joined SPS district and middle school staff at a conference on African-American Male Achievement. The group is excited to continue conversation about what we learned and how we might implement it in preparation for next year.

More listening sessions: If you are interested in participating in the next round of listening sessions, you can still sign up online or call the school and reach out to Ms. Maldonado to sign up. In order to ensure multiple voices are heard, please limit participation to one. Several families have reached out requesting additional evening times. We will offer another round of dates and times, including additional evening sessions, after Spring Break.

We look forward to a great week with your students and hope to see plenty of college gear on Thursday and Friday for those of you cheering on teams for March Madness. Have a great rest of your weekend.

    Your Washington Family
