    Husky ImageWelcome to 2nd Semester!

As always, I am surprised at how quickly the first half of the school year has flown by. As we launch into a new semester I am reflecting on our accomplishments and activities of the past 5 months. We kicked off the year with our traditional Ice Cream Social which is always a fun way to welcome new families - the transition to 6th grade is big! Curriculum Night and Parent Teacher Conferences offered families the chance to meet new teachers and see the school from inside the classroom as we all acclimate to a smaller school and new kids and families join our community. HOST put in a terrific family night to cap of our first term. The PTSA board has worked with staff to approve grants supporting both classroom enhancements (world atlases, leadership team shirts) and exploring our community (e.g., transportation for environmentally focused field trip).

    Annual Fund Well Underway
In January we kicked off our Annual Fund Drive which runs through February 16th. We have set a BIG fundraising goal of $150,000 to continue supporting our amazing programs that directly benefit our kids, teachers, school and community. Initial weeks have shown a good response to the campaign. We are about 40% of the way towards our goal but have a long way to go! Keep in mind that without an auction this year this is our ONLY fundraising event! Please consider the amount you might have spent at the auction and add that to your annual fund contribution. For more details on what the PTSA funds and how to donate, go to our Annual Fund page.

As of December, thanks to some stellar volunteer help, the PTSA has a much needed, new and improved website to keep families better informed on upcoming events. Each of these activities, plus many enrichments our students experience on a day to day basis, are funded by the PTSA. And, they would not be possible without the efforts of many volunteers. Thank you to all who have supported these efforts through time or donations!

    Upcoming Events and Volunteers Needed
We are just getting started! As we head into the 2nd semester we can look forward to more community building events and impactful opportunities for our students. Most of these events are only possible if we recruit enough parent volunteers to pull them off.
    • PTSA Board Meeting, February 7th, non-board members are welcome to attend
    • Student Led Conferences, February 8th – appointments scheduled through Advisory teachers
    • Multicultural Night (partnership with HOST) February 15th
    • Screening of the documentary Angst, hosted by WMS PTSA, in partnership with Thurgood Marshall, John Muir and Bailey Gatzert elementary schools. (General PTSA member meeting immediately before, details to follow)
    • WMS Family Pancake Breakfast, March 10th
    • Academic showcase events – Pi-Day math event (March 14), Walapalooza (March 29) and Science Fair (June 7)
    • Grade-level Field Trips to enhance classroom curricula along with Writers in the Schools (WITS)
    • Staff Appreciation Week - May 7-11
    • 8th Grade Promotion (June 22)
Details of these events are on the school calendar accessible at the PTSA website. We welcome additional volunteers and are now beginning to recruit leadership for next year. Volunteering opportunities are regularly posted here on the PTSA website.

Thank for your commitment to the Washington Middle School Community.
    Warm Regards,
    Brindy Bundesmann
