    About Stephan Blanford

Stephan is proud to serve as a school board director, utilizing his prior experiences as a youth leader, education researcher, community advocate and parent of an SPS student to fulfill his role. His service is driven by the passionate belief that Seattle Schools can achieve the twin goals of equity and excellence for all of the families that it serves.

Dr. Blanford is honored to represent students, families and schools in District Five and all of the Seattle, his adopted home.  As the son of an Army sergeant, he received his K-12 education on military bases throughout the U.S. and Japan and has lived in Seattle for 25 years. Stephan holds a doctorate in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies and a Masters in Public Administration, both earned at the University of Washington, as well as a Bachelor of Arts in Social Justice from Antioch University Seattle. His doctoral research centered on educational leaders, policies and practices resulting in simultaneous achievement gap closure and overall student achievement; as are searcher, he has visited and studied more than 50 schools in Washington State.

He has served the children, from toddlers to young adults, in our region as a leader at Big Brothers Big Sisters of King County, the Rotary Boys and Girls Club, the Alliance for Education and the White Center Early Learning Initiative. More recently, he advises leaders of school districts and nonprofit organizations through the small business he co-owns, Lighthouse Consulting. He lists his involvement in the development and construction of the state of the art, $21 million Educare early learning facility in White Center as his proudest professional accomplishment.

Stephan was first introduced to the concept of servant leadership as a 1997 graduate of Leadership Tomorrow. Since receiving the prestigious Paul Brainerd Fellowship at Social Venture Partners (SVP), he has furthered this concept by volunteering as a Big Brother, mentoring high school and college students and serving on or leading the grant making committees of United Way of King County, the Breakfast Group, Social Venture Partners, Group Health Foundation and the Social Justice Fund. He was the PTA Legislative Chair at Beacon Hill International School (BHIS) and co-led the school's fundraising activities for a trip that its Mandarin Immersion students took to Chongqing, China.

Stephan is married to Janet Blanford and is the proud father of Delaney, who attends Mercer International Middle School. In his free time, Stephan likes to read, run marathons, listen to Jazz and occasionally skydive.
